Think of the things a body cannot go without — air, a beating heart, water. Take any one away and life stops. Vital can be pictured as pointing at exactly that kind of thing: not merely useful, but the part that is carrying the life of the whole. Everything else the word does grows out of that picture, either by 'alive' to plans and projects, or by looking at the aliveness itself.
