  1. 1致敬（pay homage to：向……致敬）。古義是封臣對領主的效忠禮。

    Homage is something you do to show that you respect a person, a piece of work, or an idea you think matters. The usual phrase is pay homage to: a film may pay homage to an older director by copying a famous shot; a speech may pay homage to a teacher. It is a fairly formal word — in ordinary talk people more often say respect or tribute — but writers and film people use it a lot. Though actually, the older meaning was stricter: in the Middle Ages, homage was the public promise a vassal made to his lord, and becoming “his man.” That is why the word sits on Latin homo, “a man.” You still meet that sense in history books. One more messy bit: some Americans say it like the French word hommage (a soft oh-MAHZH, and they drop the h), because the two words mean almost the same thing. The usual English is HOM-ij, with a sounded h.
