Textured can be pictured as a piece of cloth held up to the light: the surface is not one flat thing, it is made of threads crossing each other, so your fingers catch on it and the light breaks up across it. Everything this word does comes back to that — a surface with small parts in it, rather than one blank plane. Move the picture from the hand to the ear or the eye of a reader, and the same word describes a song or a novel made of many strands.

Wiktionary gives textured as texture + -ed, and traces texture through Middle French texture to Latin textūra, from texō, to weave. The weaving picture is not a decoration added later: it is the oldest thing in the word.
