1. 1

When something is patterned, it is not plain: it has a design on it. The design is often a repeating one — flowers, spots, checks, stripes, little shapes. We use the word a lot for cloth and for things in the house: a patterned shirt, patterned wallpaper, a patterned plate. Shops and fashion people say it all the time; it is an ordinary, neutral word. Though actually, writers sometimes stretch it and call a life or a habit patterned when the same shape keeps coming back. That use is quieter and more formal. For everyday English, think of a surface with a pattern on it.
