Picture a line that runs along and then hits a marker — and stops there, on purpose. Terminate is end, but the formal, official version: a contract, a service, a journey reaches its set stopping point. Where end just says it finished, terminate carries the feeling of a boundary that was decided in advance, or of someone deciding it now.
