The taste of sugar or honey on your tongue — pleasant, easy to like, something you want more of. From that one taste, the word spreads to anything that gives the same easy, pleasant feeling through another sense or in the heart: a kind person, a child, a fresh smell, a gentle voice, a happy memory. The noun side (a candy, a dessert, 'sweetheart') is the taste turned back into a thing.
