A peacemaker is someone who tries to persuade other people, groups, or countries to stop fighting. They use talk, patience, and compromise more than weapons. In a family, the peacemaker is the person who steps in when two relatives shout. In world news, a peacemaker may be a leader who sits both sides at a table. The word feels warm and a little moral; it can also sound slightly old-fashioned, because it is a famous Bible word. In 1526 William Tyndale put peacemaker into English to translate a Greek word in the New Testament that means people who make peace. An older English Bible, Wycliffe's in 1395, had used pesible men instead, following the Latin. It is not the same as peacekeeper: a peacemaker tries to create peace, often by persuasion; a peacekeeper is usually a soldier sent to hold a peace that is already fragile. There is also a famous gun, and later a story character, called the Peacemaker — that is this same word used as a name, not a new classroom meaning.
