Having to do with a husband or wife. It is a formal, rather legal word — you meet it in documents, insurance forms, court papers and news reports, almost never in ordinary talk. Common pairings: spousal support (money one person pays the other after a divorce, also called alimony), spousal benefits (health insurance or a pension that covers your husband or wife too), spousal visa, spousal abuse. In everyday English people just say 'my husband's', 'my wife's', or 'for married couples'. There is also an old noun 'spousal' meaning a wedding or the act of marrying, but you will only meet that in old books and poems; treat it as dead. Note it is an adjective: it describes something else, so you cannot say 'my spousal' the way you say 'my spouse'.
組成spouse (husband or wife) + -al (the ending that turns a noun into 'relating to that thing', as in nation → national). The noun form has a different history: it came through Middle English spousaille from Old French espousaille, meaning the wedding itself.
