A fiancée is the woman a man is going to marry: his promised wife after they have agreed to marry and before the wedding day. English took the word from French. In French, the extra -e on the end marks a woman; fiancé without that e is the man. English kept the spelling difference, which is why the two words look so alike and why mix them up. Everyday talk often skips the French word altogether: my girlfriend, we're engaged, or my wife-to-be. Fiancée is the polished noun for a card or a formal sentence. Some modern writers would rather not lean on French gender endings and choose other wording, but the dictionary pair is still fiancé / fiancée. She is not a wife yet.
