One picture holds all three uses: a match that is under way. There are two sides, a set of rules everyone agreed to, and a result that is still open. Some uses of sporting point at the match itself — a sporting event, a sporting achievement. One points at how people behave inside it — waiting for the other team instead of taking the easy points. One points at the state of the score — still close enough that either side could win, which is a sporting chance.

By surface analysis the word is sport + -ing, so it reads roughly as 'having the look of sport'. That fits both branches: things that belong to sport, and behaviour that looks the way behaviour on a playing field is supposed to look.
