核心畫面

One way to picture spoken: the words have already left the mouth and gone out as sound. The word marks that finished state, not the act of talking. After have, it says the talking is done. After be, it says the words were the thing that was said. From there it can describe anything that came out of a mouth - spoken English, the spoken word - always with writing on the other side. Turned towards the person, it hooks onto another word to say how they talk: soft-spoken, plain-spoken. And if somebody has already opened their mouth to ask for a person or a thing, that person or thing is spoken for.

From the word’s history

Wiktionary analyses the form as spoke + -n: the past-tense stem plus the old participle ending that also gives broken, chosen and written. That ending is what marks the word as already said, which is the state every later use leans on.

Wiktionary 把這個字拆成 spoke 加 -n;同一個字尾也出現在 broken、chosen、written 上。這個字尾標的就是「已經…完了」。後面所有形容詞的用法,都靠著「已經說出口」這個狀態。

Four branches

動詞的第三態

這是這個字的原始身分,也是上面那個畫面最直接的樣子:話已經說出口了。

verb · A2

The past participle of speak. It is the form used after have, has or had, and after a form of be, as in: I have spoken to her, or English is spoken here.

說(speak 的過去分詞)

說出來的,不是寫下來的

「已經說出口」這個狀態一旦拿來形容東西,就變成「這是用嘴巴說的,不是用筆寫的」。所以這一整組的對照組永遠是 written。

adjective · B1

Said out loud instead of written down. A spoken message, agreement or instruction is one that someone says in words you can hear, so there is no version of it on paper.

口說的;口頭的

講話的樣子

話已經說出口,聽的人接著會注意「他是怎麼說的」。spoken 於是接在別的字後面,變成描述說話方式的合成詞。

adjective · B2

Used at the end of a compound, joined by a hyphen, to say how a person talks or how they sound when they talk: soft-spoken, slow-spoken, plain-spoken, well-spoken.

(構詞)說話…的

已經有人開口要了

一樣是「話已經說出口」,只是這次說出口的內容是「我要這個」。這是概念上的連結,不是在說歷史來源。

adjective · C1

If something is spoken for, someone has already asked for it and it is being kept for them, so you cannot buy it or take it.
