An unwritten rule, law, or agreement is one that everybody knows and follows, even though nobody has ever written it down anywhere official. "There's an unwritten rule that you don't talk in the elevator." "By unwritten agreement, the oldest person pays the bill." This is the sense that matters most, and it is worth seeing why the word is so useful. These rules can be strong — sometimes stronger than the written ones — because breaking them makes people uncomfortable in a way you feel immediately. No one will fine you for standing on the wrong side of the ; they will just look at you. That social pressure is the whole idea. The common partners are `rule`, `law`, `code`, `agreement`, `understanding`, and the phrase `the unwritten rules of…` (the office, the road, dating, school). The word also has a simpler, more literal life: not yet written. "The last chapter is still unwritten." From there comes a lovely figurative use — "her future is unwritten" — meaning nothing is decided yet, anything could happen. That hopeful use appears a lot in songs and speeches. Register: neutral. Perfectly natural in both speech and writing.
