An indication is a sign — something you can see, hear, or notice — that points to what is happening, what is true, or what someone thinks or feels. A fever can be an indication of illness. A short, cold reply can be an indication that someone is upset, though you might be reading it wrong. The word is a little formal; in speech people often just say sign, hint, or clue. You will also meet set phrases: there is every indication that… (it strongly seems that…); a clear indication; give no indication of… (not show at all). In medicine, indication can also mean a reason to use a treatment (“this drug’s indications”) — a more technical neighbour of the same idea: a pointer that something is so, or that something should be done.
