Sitting down rather than standing — used to say that someone is on a chair or other seat, and very often to say exactly where.

You can think of seated as something that has come down into its place and is resting there. A person lowers into a chair and stays; a part slides into its slot and holds; an idea settles into someone's mind and will not move. In every use the movement is over and the thing is where it now belongs.
