meal sitting/shift · noun · B2
One of the separate times a meal is served, when there is not enough room for everyone to eat at once.
You can picture sitting as one block of time you stay seated in one place doing one thing without getting up — you sit down, you stay sat, and that whole stretch is 'a sitting'. From that single stretch-of-seated-time grow all the uses: one batch of seated together, one stretch of staying still to be painted, one stretch a court or parliament is in session.

portrait sitting · noun · B2
A time when you sit still so that an artist can paint you or a photographer can take your picture.
court/parliament session · noun · B2
One period of time when a court or parliament is meeting.
