Entrenched is the usual adjective: already strongly established and not likely to change. An entrenched habit, an entrenched belief, entrenched inequality — it has been there long enough, and it is held firmly enough, that moving it will be hard. The word often shows . Established can be calm or even proud (“an established school”). Entrenched usually says “stuck, and that is a problem.” You will hear it a lot in news and essays about , money, and old social habits. It can still describe soldiers who have dug in, but that is the older, narrower picture behind the common use.
