You can picture 'sit' as lowering your weight onto a base and staying there: your bottom comes to rest on a chair or the ground, your upper body stays up, and you stop moving. From that one picture grow two big directions — the literal 'a body resting on a base' (people, animals, even a building 'resting' on its spot) and the borrowed idea of 'settling into a place and not moving' (staying put, doing nothing, holding a position, being a settled member of a group).
