You can picture sainted as a small halo that gets attached to a name. The church puts it there first: after someone has died, a decision is made, and from then on the name is never said again. Once you can see that halo, you can see people lending it out. They lend it to a grandmother whose goodness cost her something, to a dead parent they still speak of with love, to a founder nobody is allowed to argue with — and, in one old expression, they shout a holy name simply because they have had a shock.
