Take a rose, press it flat, and shrink it. What is left is a small circle with opening out from one middle point. Every use of the word comes back to that one flat little flower: into a door, folded out of ribbon, grown by a plant against the ground, or printed in an animal's fur. The material changes; the shape does not.

Borrowed from Middle French and modern French rosette; by surface analysis, rose + -ette (a diminutive ending), so literally "little rose".
