Picture someone who is not visiting - they sleep here, their name is on the door, this address is theirs. Resident marks the difference between passing through and staying put. English then stretches that staying: a doctor who stays on at one hospital to train, an expert kept on staff at one place, and finally a joking label for the one person a group keeps around for a particular talent.
