This spelling covers two uses that a is better off keeping apart. The common one is a person part-way through training — a near-qualified doctor on the wards, a student spending a summer at a company: inside the workplace, learning, not yet fully qualified. The other is a verb about holding people in a camp during a war. They look identical on the page and the connection is not something you can read off the word, so learn them as two.
