'Tourist' is 'tour' + -ist. 'Tour' came through Old French from Latin 'tornare' (to turn on a lathe), from Greek 'tornos' (a lathe / circle). A tour is literally a turn or circuit — a going-round — so a tourist is the person who makes that round.
tourist 是 tour 加上 -ist。tour 經古法文來自拉丁文 tornare（在車床上轉），再上溯到希臘文 tornos（車床、圓圈）。tour 原意就是「轉一圈、繞一圈」，tourist 就是去繞這一圈的人——正好對上「出門兜一趟再回家」的畫面。
