Picture something travelling — a letter, a prize, a donated kidney, an email — and then picture the pair of open hands waiting at the far end of that journey. 'Recipient' names those hands: the end point, the person the thing lands on. That end-of-the-line position can be held as the picture inside the word, and it explains the word's cool, official tone. It is the label a form or an announcement uses when it needs to say who the arrow points to, without saying anything about whether that person asked for it, earned it, or wanted it.
