From Latin municipalis, from municipium — a town whose people took on the running of their own affairs. It splits into munus 'a service or duty owed to the community' + a form of capere 'to take up'. So a municipality is, at root, a town that takes up its own public duties — exactly the sense of shared services the word still carries.
來自拉丁文 municipalis，源於 municipium——一座自己承擔起自身事務的城鎮。拆開來是 munus（欠社群的一份服務、義務）加上 capere（承擔、接下）的變形。所以一個 municipality 骨子裡就是「自己接下公共義務的城鎮」，正對應這個字今天仍帶著的公共服務含義。
