A promise made long before, and a road that takes years to walk. Somewhere ahead is a land that has already been given away in words, and the people on the road keep going because of that. The whole phrase holds three things at once: the waiting, the walking, and the place at the end. Whenever English it, all three come along — which is why it never means simply 'a nice place'.
