In the Bible, Canaan is the land God promises to Abraham and his people — the promised land. In history it names the old country along the eastern Mediterranean, roughly the land later called Palestine and the neighbours around it. You meet the word in church, in history class, and in older literature; you will not hear it for the modern map. English now usually says it in two beats, KAY-nən, though older readers sometimes gave it three. Do not confuse it with , the small town of the wedding miracle.
迦南(聖經中的應許之地)
組成Taken from church Latin Chanaān, from Ancient Greek Χαναάν (Khanaán), from Biblical Hebrew כְּנַעַן (kanáʕan). Long ago the first vowel was a long “ah”; after English's Great Vowel Shift it became the “ay” in KAY-nən. Writers once could say it with three beats; two is normal now.
