A haven is a place where people or animals can live quietly, or run to, and feel safe. Long ago it meant a harbour: a stretch of water where a ship could rest out of a storm. You can still meet that older picture in careful writing, but most speakers now use haven for any safe place — a haven for birds, a haven for people who have had to leave home, a quiet room that feels like a haven after a loud street. It is a warm word, a little softer and more emotional than shelter, and not as everyday as home. Writers like the pair a safe haven. You do not count it in the usual way: people say a haven for…, not havens as a dry list of buildings. It is not slang and not a legal stamp; it sits in the middle, and it always carries that feeling of shelter.
組成From Old English hæfen, a harbour or port, from an old Germanic word for the sea (Dutch haven, German Hafen sit on the same line). Some scholars tie that sea-word to an old verb meaning “to lift / heave,” as in a heaving sea; that last step is not certain.
