Moses is a leader of the Jewish people in the stories of the Bible, and one of the most famous figures in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim tradition. As the story goes, he brought the out of slavery in Egypt. When the Egyptian army came after them, God parted the Red Sea so they could walk across on the sea bed; the water then closed on the army. Later, on Mount , Moses received the Ten — God’s laws — on stone tablets. People also speak of Mosaic Law to mean that body of law. Though actually English has a : mosaic, the picture made of tiny tiles, is a different word and does not come from Moses. You may hear older speakers cry Holy Moses! when they are surprised; that is just a mild outburst, not a history lesson.
組成From Latin Mōsēs, from Ancient Greek Mōsês, earlier Mōusês, from Biblical Hebrew mōšê. The next step back is unclear. It is sometimes guessed to contain Egyptian msj (“to give birth to”), a piece in names meaning “such-and-such a god bore him”; or Egyptian mw (“water”). Those are guesses, not settled fact.
