Think of a set of scales with several pans, and one pan sitting lower than all the rest. The word names that tilt — the fact that one thing is pressing down harder than everything else in the group. What puts it down there can be two different things. It may be weight: one country, one company, one team simply outmatches the others. Or it may be sheer number: so many of one kind went into the pan that nothing else comes close.

From the word’s history

The packet gives two cuts of the same word. It comes from predominant plus the noun ending -ance; and by surface analysis it is pre- plus dominance. Dominance already means holding others down, and pre- puts this one out in front of the rest. That is the tilted pan: not merely strong, but ahead of everything else in the group.

Wiktionary entry for predominance, kaikki extract supplied in the evidence packet (source_ref kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:1092011206:5060): 'From predominant + -ance. By surface analysis, pre- + dominance.'
