Abundance means a large quantity of something — so much that you notice there is plenty, not a little. You can speak of an abundance of food, of rain, of ideas, of caution. It is a step more formal than a lot or plenty; you meet it in writing, in speeches, and in careful talk more than in quick chat. People also stretch it: an abundance of caution means being very careful, perhaps more careful than you strictly need. You normally keep it singular: an abundance of…, not a string of abundances. The close verb is : fish in this river — they are there in large numbers.
