    Dominance is the fact of being stronger, more important, or more noticeable than the others around you. A company can have market dominance: most people buy from them. An animal can show dominance in a group: the others give way. A colour can have dominance in a painting: your eye goes there first. Scientists also use it for genes: a dominant gene is the one that shows. It is a cooler, more factual word than domination. Dominance often just names who is on top, without saying they are being cruel. You hear it in news, sport, science, and business. Though actually, people mix it up with domination all the time. Dominance can be quiet and simply there. Domination is more the grip — control that presses down.
