Possessive can be pictured as a hand curled around something with the thought 'this is mine' behind it — and the hand does not open easily. First it is objects: your things, and you do not want them borrowed or touched. Then the same hand closes around a person. Grammar borrows the plain idea underneath, 'belongs to whom', to name the my / mine / Mei's forms.
