You can think of 'ping' as one small bright signal that shoots out and stops — something you could draw as a single spark. Sometimes the spark is only a sound: the microwave, a fork on a plate. Sometimes you send the spark out on purpose and wait to see what comes back: a submarine's pulse under the water, a test signal to a server, a quick message to a friend. And sometimes the picture is the movement rather than the noise: something small and hard springing away after it is flicked or hit. Short, bright, gone in a moment — that feeling runs under all of them.

The Wiktionary entry supplied in this packet says 'ping' is partly a copy of the sound itself, and partly a continuation of Middle English pingen 'to prick, prod', from Old English pyngan 'to prick', with English 'pang' listed as a relative. A prick is short and sharp, which sits comfortably next to the short sharp sound.
