    The pleasant ringing sound a bell makes, or a set of bells or metal tubes that make that sound — like a clock that chimes on the hour, or wind chimes hanging outside a house that ring softly in the wind. As a verb, it also means to make that ringing sound (the clock chimed twice). There's a useful phrase too: to chime in means to join a conversation and add your own comment, often cutting in while someone else is talking.

Probably from Old Northern French chimbe 'cymbal', from Latin cymbalum.
