Belonging to the ruling class of ancient Rome — the old families who held the top public and religious offices and sat in the Senate.
Picture the few old families at the top of early Rome — the fathers, the ones with a seat in the Senate and first claim on every office. Everything the word does today is measured from that small group: being one of them, belonging to them, looking as if you might, and governing in their manner even now.
Borrowed from Middle French patricien, from Latin patricius, derived from patres conscripti, the Roman senators; the patr- element is father.
