If something is egalitarian, it is built on the belief that everyone is equal and should have equal rights — the same standing before the law, the same chance to speak, not extra power for the rich, for men, or for an old family name. You can have an egalitarian law, an egalitarian classroom, or a country that aims to be egalitarian. As a noun, an egalitarian is a person who holds that belief. It is a serious, rather formal word from and social talk, not from the playground. People often argue about whether a place is truly egalitarian: the word names the aim, and the facts may fall short. It does not only mean “everyone has the same amount of money,” though money is one fight inside the idea.
