Wiktionary analyses 'onwards' as 'on' + '-wards': 'on' carries continuing, '-wards' points at a direction. The two parts together give the sense of heading further in the direction already taken.
Wiktionary 把 onwards 拆成 on 加 -wards：on 帶著「繼續」，-wards 指「朝某個方向」。合起來可以想成「朝著已經在走的方向再往前」，這條線索正好對上它今天的三個用法。
