You can picture along as movement that follows the length of a long line — a road, a path, a riverbank — going from one end on toward the other. Two ideas branch off that one picture: travelling forward over that line (in space, in progress, in time), and being placed or coming together beside it. The 'forward along the line' picture is the loose anchor for the whole word.
