無人能及的人或事物
Picture a row of things of the same kind, all lined up for comparison. One of them is lifted out and set on its own, because nothing left in the row can stand next to it. The name says exactly that: non- 'not' plus pareil 'alike, equal' — 'none like it'. Everything this word does starts from that one lifted-out thing.
From Middle French nonpareil 'unparalleled': non- (not) + pareil (alike, same), from Late Latin pariculus, from Latin par 'equal'. The modern core keeps the literal shape: not-equal, nothing alongside it.
來自中古法文 nonpareil(無與倫比):non-(不)+pareil(一樣、相等);pareil 來自晚期拉丁文 pariculus,再往前是拉丁文 par(相等)。今天的核心意思跟字面幾乎一樣:沒有相等的,旁邊放不下第二個。
