Mediocrity is the noun from mediocre: the state of being only , not very good. You can talk about the mediocrity of a show, a school, or a piece of work. It names the quality itself, not the size of a thing. In a slightly or use, a mediocrity can also mean a person who is never more than ordinary. The word is formal and usually ; in everyday talk people more often say “it wasn’t very good” or “nothing special.” It always keeps that disappointed shade. It is not a calm, neutral word for “the middle.” Though actually, English also lets you say “a work of mediocrity” as a sharp joke: the speaker is not being kind.
