Better than anything or anyone else — so good that nothing else has ever reached the same level. The picture inside the word is a race in which no one has ever drawn level with you: nobody has equalled you. It is high praise and it is used for achievements, skill, quality, knowledge, records, views: 'an unequalled record of service', 'her unequalled knowledge of Chinese porcelain', 'the view from the top is unequalled'. Two things are worth knowing. First, the tone is formal and admiring — you meet it in obituaries, awards speeches, museum labels, book reviews and advertising. In ordinary talk people say 'the best', 'nobody comes close', or 'second to none'. Second, the spelling. Unequalled with two l's is British; American writing uses unequaled with one. Both are correct in their own place, and Taiwan schools generally follow the British spelling. Its close relatives shade slightly differently: unmatched is the most common and most neutral, unrivalled suggests competitors who tried and lost, and unsurpassed leaves a little room for someone equal but none for anyone better.
