One way to hold motivated is to picture a hand at your back. Something is pushing, and you are moving because of it. The word does not tell you what the push is — a goal, an interest, money, a grudge — only that a push is there and that it is working. When the hand is at a person's back, we say the person is motivated. When the hand is behind an action instead, English names the hand first: politically motivated, financially motivated.
