Not planned, not meant — something you did without intending it. It usually turns up when someone is explaining or apologising after the fact: an unintentional insult, an unintentional mistake in a bill, an unintentional pause that made things awkward.
The useful thing to see is that unintentional does not mean innocent of everything. You can be careless and still be unintentional; the word only says the result was not aimed at. That is why it appears so often in careful, official language — "any offence caused was unintentional" admits the harm while denying the intent. Lawyers, apologies, and company statements love it for this reason.
It also has a lighter, almost fond use for accidental comedy: "the sign was unintentionally funny", "an unintentional masterpiece". Compared with *accidental*, which points at the event, *unintentional* points at the mind behind it — an accidental fire started by itself, an unintentional slight came out of your mouth.
組成un-（不）+ intentional（有意的、故意的）。intentional 來自 intention「意圖」，更早的拉丁文 intendere 是「把心向某處伸過去」。
