You can picture 'more' as a pile that has grown taller — there is now a greater amount or number than before, or than something else. From that one image of 'a bigger heap' come its two faces: with nouns it means a larger quantity (more water, more people), and with /verbs it pushes a quality further up the scale (more beautiful, sleep more). Stretch the same idea and you get 'extra/again', 'increasingly', and 'rather X than Y'.
