another = an + other. The simplest picture is: you already have one of something, and you reach out and add one more. Sometimes the 'one more' is the same kind as what you have (one more cup), and sometimes the point is that it is simply a DIFFERENT one (not this one — that one). Both grow from the same gesture: pointing past the thing in front of you to one beyond it.
