Picture early morning over a field or a lake: a thin, pale layer of tiny water drops hanging in the air. It does not hide things completely the way fog does — you can still make out shapes, but their edges go soft and you cannot see far. That combination of fine water in the air and blurred, half-hidden seeing is what mist carries everywhere it goes.
