Indonesia is a country of many thousands of islands in the seas of Southeast Asia. The largest include Java, , most of (the Indonesian part is called Kalimantan; Malaysia and share the rest), Sulawesi, and Bali. The capital is Jakarta. In population it is among the biggest countries on earth — often listed as fourth. Older books give a 2014 figure around 251 million; that number has already grown. Most people there are Muslim, and Islam shapes a great deal of daily life. Though actually, Indonesia is not a country with one official religion in the simple way some books say. The state recognises more than one religion; Islam is the faith of the great majority, not a single official stamp. The name was built in the 1800s from Greek Indos ('Indian') + nesos ('island'). For a time it competed with Insulinde, a Latin-style name for the same islands.
