    A knowing look or a knowing smile shows that you understand something, even though nobody has said it out loud. The look is the message: I know, and I know that you know. It can feel a little teasing, or a little pleased with itself, as if you are in on a secret that other people have missed. This is not the -ing of a verb in progress — English does not really say I am knowing. This knowing sits in front of words like look, smile, glance, and sometimes remark. It is a little like story-book English, but people still use it. Though actually, a knowing smile is not always kind; it can also say I have caught you.
