Picture an old standing silent by the road. The rider swings out a short metal lever near one foot, stands up a little, and stamps down hard. One sharp push, and an engine that was dead is running. Hold that picture and the whole word is in it: a single shove that turns something still into something moving. The push lasts a second; what it starts keeps going by itself. That is why the same word can name the lever, the stamp of the foot, and the small event that gets a stalled plan moving again.

To start the engine of a motorcycle or scooter by pushing a small lever down hard with your foot.

verb · B2

To do something that makes a process, plan, or activity start moving, or move faster, after it has stopped or been going slowly.
