The religion of Muslims. It teaches that there is one God, follows the teaching of the prophet Muhammad, and takes the Quran (also written Koran) as its holy book.

One name, and then the circle it draws. At the centre is the faith itself: one God, the teaching of Muhammad, the Quran. Around it stand the people who live by that faith and the lands where they have lived for centuries. English lets the one name stand for both — sometimes the belief, sometimes the whole world built around it — and the sentence tells you which one is meant.

From Arabic islām, 'submission, surrender', the verbal noun of aslama; first recorded in English around 1610. The name itself describes the act at the heart of the faith: giving oneself over to God.
